Can you use Zelle for business? Limits, fees and the risks
Many US banks let business checking accounts send and receive Zelle. Zelle itself charges no fee, and your bank sets the limits. Payments arrive in minutes and cannot be reversed, and there is no purchase protection, so it suits trusted customers and small amounts.

Zelle moves money between US bank accounts in minutes, using an email address or phone number instead of account details. Many small businesses use it to collect from regular customers and pay local contractors. Whether it suits yours depends on who you are paying and how much.
Can a business use Zelle?
Yes, through a business checking account at a participating bank. Zelle is run by Early Warning Services, a company owned by several large US banks, and works inside each bank's own app and online banking. The standalone Zelle app closed in 2025, so for both personal and business use you now go through your bank.
Not every bank offers Zelle on business accounts, and some offer it only on certain account types. Ask before you print the email address on invoices.
What does Zelle cost a business?
Zelle does not charge fees. Banks may. Most do not charge to receive, and some charge business accounts to send above a certain number of payments. There is no merchant processing fee like card payments, which is the main reason businesses like it.
What are the Zelle limits for business?
Each bank sets its own. Business limits are usually higher than personal ones and often several thousand dollars per day, with higher weekly or monthly caps. New accounts and new recipients often start with lower limits. If your recipient's bank does not support Zelle, payments to them can take one to three business days and may have lower limits.
Is Zelle safe for business payments?
It is secure as a network. The risk is in who you pay. Once a Zelle payment is sent to an enrolled recipient, it cannot be cancelled. There is no purchase protection: if you pay for goods that never arrive, Zelle and your bank are not obliged to refund you. Banks have added scam reimbursement for some cases of impostor fraud, but it is limited and at their discretion.
| Use | Good fit? |
|---|---|
| Collecting from regular customers you know | Yes |
| Paying a local contractor you have worked with | Yes |
| Paying a new supplier you found online | No |
| Large payments | Usually over the limit; use ACH or wire |
| Payments abroad | Not possible |
How does Zelle compare with ACH and cards?
| Zelle | ACH | Business card | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed | Minutes | 1 to 2 business days, or same day | Instant authorisation |
| Cost | Usually free | Low | Merchant pays fees |
| Reversal | Not after sending | Limited returns rules | Chargeback rights |
| Limits | Bank-set, lower | Higher | Card limit |
| Records | Basic memo | Remittance fields | Merchant data |
See ACH vs wire for larger domestic payments and ACH debit vs ACH credit for collections.
Does Zelle income get reported to the IRS?
Zelle says it does not report payments on Form 1099-K, because it does not hold funds. That does not make income tax-free. Business income received by Zelle is taxable like any other. See the 1099-K threshold for 2026.
Alternatives for paying people abroad
If your contractors are outside the US, Zelle cannot reach them. Rivet's Growth plan pays contractors and suppliers in 120+ countries from the company's USD balance, in one batch, with each recipient's local rail and fee shown before you approve.
Questions people ask
Is Zelle free for businesses?

What is the Zelle limit for business accounts?
Each bank sets its own limits. Business limits are often several thousand dollars a day and higher monthly. New accounts usually start lower.
Can I accept Zelle from customers?
Yes, if your business account supports Zelle. Customers send to the email address or US mobile number enrolled to your business account.
