Why is my ACH payment pending? How long ACH really takes

An ACH payment moves in batches on business days. Standard ACH settles in one or two business days; Same Day ACH settles the same afternoon if your bank submits it before one of three Federal Reserve deadlines. Pending usually means the batch has not settled yet.

An ACH credit submitted before a Same Day ACH window, with settlement time shown.

"It says pending" is the most common message finance teams get after an ACH payment. The payment has usually not failed. ACH is a batch system that settles on business days, and a payment sits in a queue until its batch settles.

How does an ACH payment actually move?

  1. The sender's bank (the ODFI) accepts the instruction and adds it to a file.
  2. It sends the file to an ACH operator, the Federal Reserve's FedACH or The Clearing House's EPN, before a deadline.
  3. The operator sorts the entries and delivers them to the receiving banks (RDFIs).
  4. On the settlement date, money moves between the banks.
  5. The receiving bank posts the money to the account.

Each step happens at set times on business days. Miss a deadline and the payment waits for the next one.

The Federal Reserve's Same Day ACH submission deadlines are 10:30 a.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Eastern, with settlement at 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Your bank's own cut-offs are earlier, because it needs time to build and send the file.

Why is my ACH payment still pending?

ReasonWhat is happening
Weekend or holidayACH does not settle on Saturdays, Sundays or federal holidays
Missed the cut-offThe payment waits for the next window or the next business day
Future effective dateThe sender scheduled it for later
Over the Same Day limitEntries over $1 million go next day
Bank risk reviewThe sending or receiving bank holds it for checks
New account or new payeeBanks often hold early ACH activity longer
Funds availabilityThe receiving bank has the money but has not released it yet

Since 2026, Nacha's fraud monitoring rules require banks and large originators to screen for unauthorised and fraudulently induced payments. That has made risk-based holds a little more common. Our article on the 2026 Nacha ACH rules covers the change.

What is the Same Day ACH limit?

$1 million per payment. Nacha has approved raising it to $10 million, effective 17 September 2027. A payment over the limit is not rejected; it settles the next day. Splitting a large payment to get under the cap breaks the rules.

What should you check when a payment is late?

  1. Ask the sender for the date it was submitted and the effective date.
  2. Ask for the trace number. Your bank can search with it.
  3. Check for a return. A returned payment comes back with a code, such as R01 or R03. See ACH return codes.
  4. If it settled but is not available, ask your bank about holds.

When is ACH the wrong choice?

If money must arrive within hours, a domestic wire through Fedwire settles in real time during the day. See ACH vs wire transfer for cost and speed. For payments abroad, ACH does not reach most foreign banks at all; see international ACH.

ACH with Rivet

Rivet gives registered companies USD account details in their own name, with an ACH routing number and a wire routing number, on the free Starter plan. Clients pay by ACH like any US vendor, and the account shows each payment's status as it moves.

Questions people ask

How long does an ACH transfer take?

Standard ACH credits usually settle in one to two business days. Same Day ACH settles the same business day if the bank submits it before a Federal Reserve deadline. The receiving bank then has to make the money available, usually by the settlement day.

Do ACH payments process on weekends?

No. The ACH Network settles on business days only, so a payment sent on Friday evening normally settles on Monday or Tuesday. Federal holidays also add a day.

Why does my bank show an ACH as pending when the sender says it was sent?

Sent usually means the sender's bank accepted the instruction. It still has to go into a batch, pass through the ACH operator and settle. Until settlement, many banks show it as pending.

Can an ACH payment be cancelled while pending?

Sometimes, if the sending bank has not yet released the batch. After that, the sender can request a reversal only for specific errors, such as a duplicate or wrong amount, within five banking days.

Can you send ACH internationally? IAT and cross-border ACH explained

No, not in the way most people hope. ACH moves money between US accounts. An IAT entry is used when an ACH payment involves money moving to or from a bank outside the US, but it only reaches a handful of countries. To pay most suppliers abroad, you need SWIFT or a local payout.
