Bulk payments explained: how mass payouts work across countries

A bulk payment turns one file into many payments. Across countries, each line can travel on a different rail. Here is how it works and how to keep it safe.

"Bulk payment meaning" is searched by finance leads who have just been told to stop paying 40 contractors one by one. A bulk payment turns one file into many payments. When recipients are in different countries, the provider sends each line on a different rail.

How a bulk payment works

  1. You upload a file, or select saved recipients, with one line per payment.
  2. The provider validates each line: name, account format, currency, amount.
  3. You see a preview: what each recipient receives, the cost of each line, and the total.
  4. A second person approves.
  5. The provider funds the batch from your balance and sends each payment.
  6. You get a status for every line: sent, delivered, returned.

Domestic vs cross-border batches

Domestic batchCross-border batch
RailsOne rail, such as an ACH batchEach recipient's local rail where available
CurrenciesOneMany, converted line by line
Typical failuresWrong account numberWrong format for the country, name mismatch, missing purpose code

The data each line needs

  • Recipient's legal name, as on their account
  • Account details in their country's format: IBAN, sort code and account number, IFSC and account number, CLABE, and so on
  • Currency and amount
  • A reference, such as the invoice number
  • Sometimes a purpose of payment or the recipient's address, depending on the country

Controls for every batch

  • Saved recipients rather than typing details each month
  • A second approver for each batch
  • New or changed bank details flagged and verified on a call; changed details are how invoice fraud works
  • A preview of the total and per-line cost before approval
  • A limit on the batch size or on single lines

Where batches go wrong

Most failures are data errors: an IBAN with a typo, a recipient name that does not match their bank account, a currency the corridor does not support. Validating the file before approval catches nearly all of them. The international contractors guide covers the paperwork behind each line, and remittance advice covers telling recipients what each payment is for.

On Rivet

Rivet's Payouts pays up to 120+ countries from one CSV or a saved list. Each line goes on the recipient's local rail, or as USDC or USDT where there is none, and you see the cost of every line before you confirm.

Questions people ask

What does bulk payment mean?

Paying many recipients in one instruction instead of one by one: for example, all contractors at month end, or all marketplace sellers on payout day. The provider splits the instruction into individual payments.

What are mass payouts?

Another name for bulk payments, often used by platforms and marketplaces paying large numbers of sellers, creators or drivers. The mechanics are the same: one file or API call, many payments.

How do bulk payments work across countries?

The provider routes each line to the recipient's local rail where it can, such as SEPA in Europe, Faster Payments in the UK, or a domestic transfer in India or the Philippines. Lines it cannot pay locally may go by SWIFT or, where agreed, as stablecoins.

How do I make bulk payments safely?

Use saved recipients, require a second approver for each batch, flag any new or changed bank details for verification, and review the batch total and per-line cost before approving.
