"UK e-invoicing mandate 2029" is one of the first completions after "uk e-invoicing". Businesses are asking because the date is now public and the details are not.

What an e-invoice means

A structured invoice, such as one in a Peppol format, that software can read without a person typing it in. A PDF sent by email does not count. The buyer's system receives the data directly and can match it to orders and payments.

How to prepare now

  1. Ask your accounting software provider about Peppol support and its timeline.
  2. Clean up customer records: legal names, addresses and VAT numbers.
  3. Standardise invoice numbering and references so payments match invoices.
  4. Watch GOV.UK for the implementation roadmap.

Why payments matter too

E-invoicing speeds up the invoice. The money still has to arrive and be matched. Payments that carry the invoice number as a reference reconcile automatically; payments that arrive by SWIFT with a truncated reference do not.

For UK companies selling abroad

EU countries are moving at different speeds, and ViDA requires e-invoicing for intra-EU B2B supplies from July 2030. A UK company selling into the EU may face customer requests for structured invoices sooner. See e-invoicing mandates 2026 to 2028.

Questions people ask

When does e-invoicing become mandatory in the UK?

The government has announced April 2029 for B2B and B2G VAT invoices. Implementation details, including any phasing, were still to be confirmed at the time of writing.

What is Peppol?

An international network and standard for exchanging structured e-invoices through certified access points. The UK has confirmed it as the framework for the mandate.

Does it apply to invoices to customers abroad?

The announcement covers VAT invoices for UK B2B and B2G transactions. Treatment of cross-border invoices depends on the final rules and on the customer's country.

What should we do now?

Check whether your accounting software plans Peppol support, clean up customer data such as VAT numbers and addresses, and keep invoice and payment records matched.

UK invoice requirements: what a VAT invoice must include

A UK VAT invoice needs a unique number, dates, both parties' details, your VAT number and the VAT breakdown. Invoices to customers abroad need a little more: the reverse charge note and the right payment details.

How to check a UK or EU VAT number before you invoice

A customer's VAT number decides whether you charge VAT or apply the reverse charge. Checking it takes a minute: HMRC's service for UK numbers, the EU's VIES for EU numbers.
