SEPA Instant and Verification of Payee: what changed for businesses

Since October 2025, euro payments in the EU can arrive in seconds, and payers see a warning if your name does not match your IBAN. Here is what to check on your side.

A euro payment moving instantly between two accounts.

Two changes to euro payments landed in 2025 under the EU's Instant Payments Regulation. Instant transfers became standard and cost no more than ordinary ones, and every euro transfer now checks the payee's name before it goes. For a company that invoices European clients, the second change is the one to act on.

What the regulation requires

Regulation (EU) 2024/886 amended the SEPA rules for euro credit transfers:

RequirementEuro-area providers
Receive SEPA Instant paymentsFrom 9 January 2025
Send SEPA Instant paymentsFrom 9 October 2025
Price instant no higher than standardFrom 9 January 2025
Verification of Payee before every transferFrom 9 October 2025

Providers in EU countries outside the euro area have later deadlines.

SEPA Instant in practice

A SEPA Instant transfer reaches the payee's account within 10 seconds, at any hour, on any day. For businesses that means payments sent on a Saturday arrive on Saturday, and a client can pay at the last minute before a deadline. Most clients will still pay in weekly runs, but more of those runs now settle instantly. The SEPA guide covers SEPA basics and how non-EU companies use it.

Verification of Payee

Before a euro transfer is sent, the payer's provider compares the name the payer typed with the name on the account behind the IBAN. The payer sees one of:

  • Match: the payment goes ahead normally.
  • Close match: the provider shows the real account name and asks the payer to confirm.
  • No match: the payer is warned that the money may go to the wrong account.
  • Check not possible: for example, if the payee's provider did not respond.

The payer can still proceed after a warning, but many finance teams will not.

What to check on your side

  1. Use your exact legal name on invoices, matching the name on your EUR account. "Acme" will produce a close match if the account says "Acme Trading Ltd".
  2. Watch for provider names. If your EUR details are held at a provider that shows its own name rather than yours, clients may see a no-match. Ask your provider what name the check returns.
  3. Tell regular clients the exact name to enter, and update it in their vendor records.
  4. Use the same name across platforms such as Stripe, Upwork and Amazon payout settings.

Why this helps you too

Verification of Payee was introduced to fight authorised push payment fraud, where a payer is tricked into paying a fraudster's IBAN. For a supplier, it means a fake "our bank details have changed" email is less likely to divert your clients' payments.

EUR details on Rivet

Rivet's Growth plan includes EUR details with an IBAN on the SEPA network, issued for your company, so European clients pay you by SEPA like a local supplier. Before you move clients over, ask us which account name the check will show, and put that exact name on your invoices. Questions people ask

What is SEPA Instant?

SEPA Instant Credit Transfer is a euro payment scheme that delivers funds to the payee's account within 10 seconds, at any time, every day of the year. Under the EU Instant Payments Regulation it is now offered by most euro-area payment providers at the same price as a standard transfer.

What is Verification of Payee?

A check the payer's provider runs before a euro credit transfer is sent: it compares the payee name the payer entered with the name on the account behind the IBAN. The payer sees a match, a close match with the correct name, or no match, and decides whether to proceed.

Why do clients see a warning when paying my IBAN?

Because the name they entered does not match the account name closely enough. Common causes are trading names, missing suffixes like Ltd or LLC, or a provider's name instead of yours. Give clients the exact account name shown on your EUR details.

Does Verification of Payee apply to payments from outside the EU?

The obligation applies to payment providers in the EU and EEA for euro credit transfers. A non-EU company receiving into EUR details on the SEPA network will still be checked when an EU client pays it.
