A Rivet note comparing PayPal business and personal accounts beside the US flag.

"PayPal business vs personal" and "paypal business vs personal account" are the top completions after "PayPal business vs". The answer for a company is short.

Fees

On PayPal's US business fee page (read 1 November 2026): 3.49% plus a fixed fee for checkout payments, 1.50% more for international payments, and a 3.00% spread for currency conversion. See PayPal business fees.

Tax reporting

PayPal issues Form 1099-K for payments for goods and services above the IRS threshold. Personal "friends and family" payments are not meant for business and are not a way around this.

When to use bank transfer instead

For a $5,000 invoice, PayPal's fee is about $175 plus the fixed fee. ACH costs little or nothing. For clients abroad, local bank details in their currency are cheaper than PayPal's international and conversion fees.

Questions people ask

Do I need a PayPal business account?

If you sell goods or services, yes. PayPal's terms say personal accounts are not for commercial activity.

Are fees different on business accounts?

Fees depend on the payment type, not the account type. Commercial payments carry fees; personal friends-and-family payments often do not.

Will PayPal report my sales to the IRS?

Yes, on Form 1099-K once payments for goods and services pass the reporting threshold.

Can I link PayPal to a business bank account?

Yes, and you should, so business money stays separate from personal.

Banking for a US subsidiary of a foreign company

A US subsidiary owned by a foreign company opens a bank account like any US entity, but the bank looks through the parent to the people who own it. Intercompany payments need clean records.
