GHS payments for business: GhIPSS, mobile money and paying in Ghana

Inside Ghana, cedis move by GhIPSS Instant Pay in seconds, by ACH in batches, by RTGS for large sums, and by mobile money, which is linked to bank accounts through interoperability. A foreign company paying Ghana usually sends USD by SWIFT or pays cedis through a provider.

Ghana has one of Africa's most connected payment systems. Mobile money wallets, bank accounts and cards can pay each other, and most transfers settle within seconds. For a foreign company paying suppliers or staff in Ghana, the choice is mostly about whether to send dollars or cedis.

Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS), a subsidiary of the Bank of Ghana, runs most of these. Mobile money interoperability, launched in 2018, means an MTN MoMo user can pay a Telecel Cash user or a bank account directly.

How important is mobile money?

Very. For individuals and small businesses, mobile money is often the main account. Many suppliers, agents and freelancers prefer to be paid to a wallet. Wallets have balance and transaction limits set under Bank of Ghana rules, which can be too low for large invoices. For a fuller comparison, see mobile money vs a bank account for business.

What changed with the E-Levy?

The 1% Electronic Transfer Levy was abolished from 2 April 2025, which lowered the cost of moving money between wallets and banks. Operators' own fees still apply. See whether the E-Levy is still charged.

How does a foreign company pay someone in Ghana?

MethodWhat arrivesWatch for
USD SWIFT wire to a Ghanaian bankUSD, often converted on arrivalIntermediary fees, the receiving bank's FX rate
USD to the recipient's foreign currency accountUSDRecipient needs a foreign currency account
Local GHS payout through a providerCedis, by GIP or to a walletProvider's FX margin and fee
StablecoinUSDC or USDTRecipient has to off-ramp

If your contract is in USD and the supplier has a dollar account, a wire may be right. For staff and contractors paid in cedis, a local payout usually costs less and arrives faster.

What foreign exchange rules apply?

The Bank of Ghana sets the rules on foreign currency accounts and on transfers in and out of Ghana. Banks ask for supporting documents, such as invoices and contracts, for larger transfers. Ghanaian exporters are generally required to repatriate export proceeds. A Ghanaian company receiving payments from abroad should keep the documents that explain each one.

GHS with Rivet

Rivet's Scale plan holds GHS next to USD, EUR and GBP. Registered companies can hold, convert and pay out cedis from the same account, with local details where we issue them; ask at onboarding. A company with clients abroad can take USD into account details in its own name and convert to cedis when it needs to pay in Ghana.

Questions people ask

How long does a bank transfer take in Ghana?

GhIPSS Instant Pay transfers arrive in seconds. ACH transfers clear in batches, usually the same or next business day. RTGS transfers settle in real time during business hours.

Can I pay a Ghanaian supplier's mobile money wallet from abroad?

Some international payout providers can send to MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash and AT Money wallets directly. Wallet limits apply, so larger payments are better sent to a bank account.

Can a business in Ghana hold US dollars?

Yes. Ghanaian banks offer foreign currency accounts, subject to Bank of Ghana foreign exchange rules on how they can be funded and used.

Is there still a tax on mobile money in Ghana?

The E-Levy was repealed from 2 April 2025. Operators' own fees for transfers and cash-outs still apply.

Mobile money vs a bank account for business: what each is good for

Mobile money is the fastest way to collect from customers across much of Africa, and it is often where suppliers and staff want to be paid. A bank account handles large invoices, foreign clients, credit and audits better. Most growing businesses run both and sweep between them.
