PayPal in Cameroon: what businesses can and cannot do

PayPal is available in Cameroon, but what a Cameroonian account can do is limited compared with US or European accounts. Businesses paid by foreign clients usually need a bank route as well.

"Is PayPal available in Cameroon" and "paypal cameroon account" are among the top Cameroon searches on payments. The answer is yes, with limits that matter for businesses.

For businesses with foreign clients

A Douala agency invoicing a French client €3,000 a month will usually be paid more cheaply by bank transfer into its own account than through PayPal, once fees and conversion are counted. CEMAC exchange rules apply to that inflow; see CEMAC exchange rules on export proceeds.

The XAF peg

The CFA franc (XAF) is pegged to the euro at 655.957 per euro. Euro invoices are predictable in value; dollar invoices move.

Where Rivet fits

CEMAC rules decide whether a Cameroonian company may hold proceeds abroad, so Rivet does not pitch offshore accounts to Cameroonian-registered companies. Many Cameroonian founders also own a company registered elsewhere, such as a US LLC. Rivet serves those companies where we support the owners' country. Rivet is not a bank; regulated partner institutions hold the funds. See CFA franc business payments.

Questions people ask

Is PayPal available in Cameroon?

Yes. Features available to Cameroonian accounts are listed on PayPal's country pages and may be more limited than elsewhere.

Can I withdraw PayPal funds in Cameroon?

It depends on what PayPal supports for Cameroon at the time. Check your account and PayPal's current terms.

Is PayPal good for B2B invoices?

Usually not. Percentage fees on international payments and conversion make bank transfers cheaper for regular invoices.

What rules apply to foreign currency?

CEMAC exchange regulations, administered with the BEAC, govern foreign currency flows for Cameroonian residents.

Cameroon and CEMAC exchange rules: what exporters must repatriate and when

Cameroon shares a currency and an exchange regulation with five other CEMAC states. Since 2018 the rules require exporters to bring proceeds home within a set period and pass a share to the BEAC. Holding money abroad is restricted. Enforcement has tightened, especially for extractive sectors.
