Registered agent address vs business address for bank accounts

A registered agent receives legal mail for your LLC. Many banks will not accept that address as your business address. Here is why and what to use instead.

A Rivet note explaining registered agent and business addresses beside the US flag.

Non-resident founders often form an LLC with a registered agent's address and then use it everywhere. Banks treat it differently.

Why banks reject agent addresses

Anti-money-laundering rules ask banks to understand where a business operates. A registered agent's address is shared by thousands of companies and says nothing about operations.

What to use

  • A US office or coworking address with a lease.
  • For non-resident owners, the operating address abroad, with a recent utility bill or lease.
  • A virtual office, only if the provider accepts it.

Keep it consistent

Use the same operating address on the EIN application, the state filing where possible, invoices and bank applications, or have an explanation ready.

Where Rivet fits

Rivet's KYB accepts registered companies whose owners live in supported countries and asks for the operating address and proof that fits it. If something is missing, we ask for that item only. Rivet is not a bank; regulated partner institutions hold the funds. See proof of address for a business bank account.

Questions people ask

Can I use my registered agent's address for a bank account?

Some providers accept it; many do not, because it is not where the business operates. Check before you apply.

What address should a non-resident LLC use?

Many providers accept the owner's operating address abroad, with proof such as a utility bill or lease.

Are virtual offices accepted?

Some are. Providers often reject addresses known to be mail-forwarding services. Ask first.

Does the address need to match the IRS records?

Keep the EIN records, state filings and bank records consistent, or explain the difference.

A Rivet note showing banking steps for a US subsidiary beside the US flag.Accounts

Banking for a US subsidiary of a foreign company

A US subsidiary owned by a foreign company opens a bank account like any US entity, but the bank looks through the parent to the people who own it. Intercompany payments need clean records.
