Pakistani companies paying for software, cloud and ads abroad

A Karachi e-commerce company pays for its cloud hosting, design tools and Meta ads in dollars. Card limits, bank approvals and taxes on foreign card spending make every payment a small negotiation. Exporters with ESFCA balances have the easiest path.

A Rivet note listing a Pakistani company's monthly software, cloud and ad spend abroad, beside a Pakistani flag disc.

A Karachi online fashion retailer spends about $7,400 a month abroad: cloud hosting, design tools, an email platform and Meta and Google ads. Its business card hits its international limit mid-month, ads stop, and someone uses a personal card to keep campaigns running. The accountant then has to reconcile a personal card against company expenses.

How payments usually go

  • Cards for SaaS, cloud and ads, within the bank's international limits.
  • Bank transfers for larger contracts, with documents for the bank.
  • ESFCA balances for IT exporters, which can pay permitted current account expenses abroad.

Card limits

Pakistani banks set limits on international card spending under SBP rules, and adjust them. Business cards often have higher limits than personal ones, and some banks offer specific products for exporters and digital businesses. Ask for limits that match your monthly ad and software spend, and request merchant categories you need to be enabled.

Exporters have an advantage

IT companies and freelancers with ESFCAs can pay many foreign costs directly from dollars they earned, without converting rupees back. It also avoids some of the friction of rupee-funded international card spend.

Taxes and charges

Advance tax and other charges have applied to international card transactions at various times, and rates have changed. Ask your bank and tax adviser what applies now, and whether it can be adjusted against your tax liability.

Keep company spend on company cards

Using personal cards for company ads breaks the audit trail and can create tax problems. Separate company cards per tool or per channel, each with an owner and a limit, keep spending visible.

Where Rivet fits

Rivet opens business accounts for registered companies after verification. A Pakistan-registered company should check SBP rules with its bank before holding or paying from funds abroad. Companies registered elsewhere that Pakistani founders run can use a Rivet business account with Visa company cards, per-card limits, and US account details on every plan. Rivet is not a bank; regulated partner institutions hold the funds.
