Hong Kong multi-currency business account: options for 2026

Most Hong Kong companies trade in US dollars and renminbi as much as in HKD. Banks offer multi-currency accounts but can be slow to open them for new companies; digital providers fill the gap.

Google's suggestions for "Hong Kong multi currency account" lead with HSBC, DBS, Citibank and Bank of China. A Hong Kong company usually needs one, because its money rarely stays in HKD: buyers pay in USD, factories in mainland China want CNY, and rent and salaries are in HKD.

How Hong Kong companies move money

The opening problem

HKMA has asked banks to make account opening easier for genuine businesses, and simplified due diligence exists for low-risk cases. Still, a new company with directors overseas and no office often waits. Banks want to see a business plan, the first contracts or invoices, and evidence of the directors' background.

What to compare

  1. FX margin on the pairs you use: USD/HKD, USD/CNY, HKD/CNY.
  2. Telegraphic transfer fees, both outgoing and incoming.
  3. Minimum balance and the fee below it.
  4. Whether overseas buyers can pay you on a local rail in their country.

Hold, do not convert

Because the HKD is pegged to the USD in a narrow band, many traders keep working capital in USD. Converting every receipt to HKD and back adds two margins for little benefit.

Questions people ask

Why is it hard to open a business account in Hong Kong?

Banks apply strict anti-money-laundering checks, and companies with no local office, staff or directors get more questions. Expect to explain the business model, customers, suppliers and expected flows.

Can a Hong Kong company hold US dollars?

Yes. Hong Kong has no exchange controls, and companies commonly hold USD, since the HKD is pegged to it.

What is FPS?

The Faster Payment System, run by HKMA, settles HKD and RMB payments instantly between banks and stored-value providers, using account numbers, phone numbers or FPS IDs.

What should I compare between providers?

The FX margin on HKD, USD and CNY, the fee for telegraphic transfers, minimum balances, and whether you get local details to collect from overseas buyers.
