Dutch BV owned from abroad: opening the business bank account
Setting up a BV through a notary is quick. Opening its account can take weeks when directors live abroad, because banks must understand who owns and controls it and why it is Dutch.

Google's suggestions for Dutch business banking include "open business bank account netherlands" and "online business bank account netherlands". Founders who set up a BV from abroad often find the notary fast and the bank slow.
What banks review
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| KvK extract and deed | Who the company is |
| UBO register | Who owns and controls it |
| Director and UBO ID and address | Identity |
| Business description | What it does and why in the Netherlands |
| Expected flows | Countries, currencies, volumes |
| Source of funds | Where the initial money came from |
Why it takes time
Dutch banks have been fined for weak anti-money-laundering controls and now review new companies carefully. A BV run from abroad, with no Dutch office and clients in several countries, raises the questions banks must answer before opening.
How to shorten it
- File the UBO registration at the same time as the KvK registration.
- Write a one-page description: products, customers, countries, monthly volumes.
- Show first contracts or invoices.
- Document how the initial capital reached the company.
Tax residence
A BV is resident in the Netherlands by incorporation, but treaties look at where it is effectively managed. If all directors live abroad, check the position with an adviser.

Where Rivet fits
Rivet gives registered companies EUR and GBP details on Growth and USD on every plan, with KYB returning a verdict in 3 business days and asking only for what is missing. Check our eligibility list for Dutch companies. Rivet is not a bank; regulated partner institutions hold the funds. See KYB documents.
Questions people ask
Can a non-resident open a Dutch business bank account?
For a Dutch BV, yes, at some banks. Others require a Dutch resident director or Dutch operations. Ask before applying.
What documents do Dutch banks want?
The KvK extract, the deed of incorporation, the UBO register extract, IDs and proof of address for directors and UBOs, and a business description.
Why are BVs rejected?
Common reasons: unclear business model, no link to the Netherlands, high-risk countries in the flows, or incomplete UBO information.
Does the BV need Dutch substance for tax?
Tax residence depends on where the company is effectively managed. Ask an adviser if directors live abroad.
