# Wire transfer cut-off times in the US: Fedwire hours and bank deadlines

Fedwire takes customer transfers until 6 p.m. ET on business days, but banks stop earlier. Typical domestic and international wire cut-offs, and holidays.

## Key takeaways

- Fedwire Funds Service runs on business days, with a 6:00 p.m. ET deadline for customer transfers.
- Banks set their own wire cut-offs, often between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET for domestic wires, earlier for international.
- A wire sent after the cut-off, on a weekend or on a federal holiday goes out the next business day.
- Domestic wires settle in real time once sent, and are hard to reverse.
- Ask for the IMAD or Fed reference number to trace a domestic wire.

Domestic wires are the fastest way to move a large amount of US dollars between banks, as long as you send them in time. Most "my wire didn't arrive today" problems are about cut-offs, not the network.

## What are Fedwire's operating hours?

The Fedwire Funds Service, run by the Federal Reserve, operates on business days. It opens the evening before the business day and closes in the evening of the business day. The deadline that matters for most businesses is the one for customer transfers, which is 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time. After that, Fedwire accepts only bank-to-bank settlement transfers until it closes.

Fedwire does not run on weekends or federal holidays. The Federal Reserve publishes its holiday schedule every year.

## What is my bank's wire cut-off?

Earlier than Fedwire's. A bank needs time to check the request, screen it against sanctions lists, get any internal approvals and release it. Typical cut-offs:

| Wire type | Typical bank cut-off (ET) |
|---|---|
| Domestic, online banking | 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. |
| Domestic, in branch | Similar or earlier |
| International | Often late morning to early afternoon |
| Request needing a call-back | Earlier still, to allow the call |

Your bank publishes its cut-offs, usually in the online banking help pages or the business account agreement. Payments that need approval from a second person in your company must be entered and approved before the cut-off.

## What happens if I miss the cut-off?

The wire is processed on the next business day. A wire requested at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, 3 July, before a Monday holiday, may not leave until Tuesday. For closings, payroll funding and large supplier deposits, plan for the deadline, not the end of the day.

## Why are international wires different?

An international wire goes over SWIFT, often through one or more correspondent banks, and has to fit the receiving country's banking hours. A wire to Asia sent in the US afternoon arrives in the receiving bank's next morning at the earliest. Our guide to [SWIFT transfer fees and times](/blog/swift-transfer-fees-and-time) covers the international side.

## How do you trace a domestic wire?

Ask the sending bank for the IMAD (Input Message Accountability Data) and the OMAD. These are Fedwire's own references. With them, the receiving bank can find the payment in minutes. Since Fedwire moved to the ISO 20022 message format in July 2025, wires also carry richer remittance information, so the reference field is more likely to arrive intact.

## Can a wire be stopped after it is sent?

Rarely. Fedwire transfers are final when settled. The sending bank can ask the receiving bank to return the money, but the receiving bank usually needs the beneficiary's agreement. See [can you cancel a wire transfer](/blog/can-you-cancel-a-wire-transfer) for what to do if you sent one to the wrong account or a fraudster.

## Wire or ACH?

If the money does not have to arrive in hours, Same Day ACH settles the same afternoon for less, up to $1 million per payment. See [ACH vs wire](/blog/ach-vs-wire-transfer). Rivet gives registered companies USD account details with [both an ACH and a wire routing number](/accounts), so clients can choose either.

## Questions

### What time do banks stop sending wires?

It depends on the bank and the channel. Many US banks stop accepting same-day domestic wire requests between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Eastern. International wires often have an earlier cut-off, sometimes around midday, because foreign banks' hours matter too.

### Do wire transfers go through on weekends?

Not domestic Fedwire transfers. Fedwire does not operate on weekends or federal holidays. A wire requested on Saturday goes out on Monday.

### How long does a domestic wire take?

Minutes once the bank releases it, because Fedwire settles each payment in real time. Delays usually happen before release, during the bank's own checks or approvals.

### What is an IMAD number?

The Input Message Accountability Data is a unique reference Fedwire assigns to each wire. With the IMAD, the receiving bank can find the payment quickly.
