# Opening a business account for an Estonian e-Residency company

Estonian banks often decline e-resident companies with no local ties. What a non-resident OÜ needs, why the contact person matters, and options that work.

## Key takeaways

- e-Residency gives a digital identity for Estonian services; it is not citizenship, residency or a right to a bank account.
- An OÜ whose management board is abroad must appoint a contact person in Estonia, usually a licensed service provider.
- Estonian banks generally expect a substantial link to Estonia; many decline e-resident companies without one.
- A clear account of who the clients are, where they pay from and what the company spends on speeds any review.

A product designer in Lagos forms an Estonian OÜ online through e-Residency, appoints a service provider in Tallinn as the contact person and signs her first client, a startup in Berlin. The company exists in a day. Two Estonian banks then decline its account application, one in a week and one in a month.

## Why Estonian banks say no

e-Residency is a digital identity. It lets non-Estonians sign documents and run an Estonian company online. It does not give residency, citizenship or a right to a bank account, and the programme says so clearly.

Estonian banks have tightened onboarding since the money-laundering cases of the late 2010s. Many now expect a substantial link to Estonia: local clients, staff, premises or management. An OÜ run entirely from abroad, with foreign clients, often does not meet that.

## What a non-resident OÜ needs anyway

- A contact person in Estonia whenever the management board is abroad. Most founders use a licensed service provider, which also supplies the legal address.
- Accurate beneficial owner data in the Business Register.
- Annual reports filed with the register.

## Tax: the question to ask at home

Estonia taxes company profits only when they are distributed, through dividends or other payouts. That is often what draws founders. But a company managed from your home country may be tax resident there under your country's rules, whatever Estonia says. Check with an adviser where you live before relying on the Estonian rate.

## What gets an account opened

Most e-resident founders bank with regulated payment institutions or EU fintech providers. They review the same things:

1. The register extract and articles of association.
2. Identity and address documents for board members and owners.
3. A specific description of the business: who the clients are, where they are, how they pay, and what the company spends money on.

"Product design services for early-stage startups in Germany and the UK, invoiced in euros and pounds, about €8,000 a month" gets through. "Consulting" usually prompts more questions.

## Where Rivet fits

A Rivet business account accepts applications from registered companies, including Estonian OÜs with non-resident founders, with the document list shown up front and a verification decision aimed within three business days. Approved companies get US dollar details on every plan and, from the Growth plan, euro details with an IBAN and sterling details, all in the company's name. Rivet is not a bank; regulated partner institutions hold the funds and make the final approval.

## Questions

### Can an e-resident open a bank account in Estonia?

It is possible but uncommon without a real link to Estonia, such as local clients, staff or premises. Many e-resident founders use regulated payment institutions or EU fintech providers instead.

### What is a contact person?

A person or licensed service provider in Estonia whose address the company uses to receive official documents. It is mandatory when the management board is abroad.

### Does Estonia tax a non-resident OÜ?

Estonia taxes company profits when they are distributed, not when earned. But the founder's home country may treat the company as resident there if it is managed from there. Get advice in your own country.

### What will a provider ask for?

The Business Register extract, articles of association, identification of the board and beneficial owners, proof of address, and a description of the business, clients and expected payment flows.
